[ragtime] probably from ↑rag sense 3 + ↑time.

Culture:
Ragtime is played with a strong rhythm which is ‘ragged’, i.e. not regular. Pieces of ragtime music are often called rags. The most famous ragtime musicians were ‘Jelly Roll’ Morton and Scott Joplin.
